by Isabella van Marle

Isabella van Marle, born in London, raised in the Netherlands. Isabella is a creative consultant, curator and co-founder of Pictures for Purpose. We admire her dynamic way of working. Isabella's interest lies in crossovers between different artforms, drawing inspiration from art, music, architecture and traveling to name a few things. Photography tends to play a major role throughout the projects she curates. Her interest in other cultures plays out in her work – through collaboration with artists from different backgrounds or with cultural institutions abroad. Her most recent co-curated exhibition 'Essential Goods', reflects the landscape of Ukrainian photography today, launched in Kyiv in May.

“Last year I visited Biblioteca Vasconcelos in Mexico City, mostly for its impressive architecture. I then stumbled upon this great book about Mexican arts and crafts with beautiful photography of craftswomen, objects and symbolic elements. Place

“The Mountains. I am attracted to the energy in fast paced cities. Yet, I also like to unwind. Once a year I go tour skiing in the French Alps. The serenity when wandering through the untouched snow is quite magical, for a moment you feel like being alone in the world.”

Artwork

“This work from the series Chairs on the Border, was part of 'Essential Goods', a group exhibition I co-curated, which was on show in Kyiv. Ukrainian artist Elena Subach turned her lens from people to objects by studying chairs, ‘islands among waves of people’, lined at the border at the start of the full scale invasion.”
