EDIT.
by Caroline van Sprang

Caroline van Sprang spent her early years moving between Berlin and her family’s farm in Germany, learning to feel at ease in different worlds - among people, animals, and places.

In Amsterdam, she spent her twenties exploring ways of living: cooking, acting, selling goat cheese at the farmers’ market, while writing and conducting interviews for Het Parool. Alongside this work, she discovered a love for hosting - bringing friends and strangers together over meals and books.

These experiences now come together in goldsmithing, where she creates small objects in silver. Her practice centers on attention and care, bringing charm to the everyday.

Item

“The Rubber Original in black. The first rainproof coat I’ve owned since I was 16. I love the way it moves around my body and makes any outfit look chique. Wearing it oversized allows me to stay warm with a big sweater underneath, you’ll see me all year long in this coat!''

Reminiscence

“A couple years ago I asked my mom how she managed the put all the presents under the three without us knowing about it. Her trick was to ‘forget her gloves’ on our way to church. She ran back, did her magic, and joined us for the service. When we came home, all the presents had been magically ‘brought to us by Santa.’”

Dish

“Lamb stew at my place is a tradition. My brother suggested raisins last Christmas — they’ll be in this year.”

Touch

“Silver. It’s a forgiving and soft material, one that can be shaped and transformed. I’m slowly learning to work with it.”

Book

“Porn: An Oral History by Polly Barton. I read this book last year in between family gatherings. Surely takes your mind off things.”

Track

“Canto Ostinato by Simeon ten Holt (1976). The same motif, over and over and over again - stubborn and hypnotic. If I lack the patience for the whole piece, I put Section 74 on repeat.”

Activity

“Recently I’ve experienced that hosting and dinners with friends are more about presence than performing - it doesn’t have to be ‘perfect’ every time. It's really more about being and cooking together."

Film

“Das Leben der Anderen (2006), directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. My dad lived in West Berlin during the wall. A part of his family in the DDR. The movie gives me a glimpse of what that time must have been like.”
